Customer inquiry: "How does the registration of an imported vehicle in Austria work?"

We have received the following information from the service office of the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK):

Before the imported vehicle (e.g. car or motorcycle) is registered, the registration data for vehicles with an EU type approval must be entered in the approval database. The general importer enters this data and creates a data extract from the approval database. If the general importer is not authorized to enter data or does not act immediately, the respective state government is responsible for data entry.

For vehicles without an EU operating permit, an individual permit from the state government (typification) is still required.
Information on individual or special permits as well as further information on the import of motor vehicles can be found at the technical test centers of the office of the respective state government.

Furthermore, a valid, positive test report for vehicles that are subject to periodic assessment (sticker) is required for approval, provided that a periodic assessment has already become due and the assessment has not yet been saved in the assessment sticker database.
